SEO Tips and Advice for the DIY SEO

DIY = Do it yourself!

SEO = Search Engine Optimization!

Here are some general tips on SEO that will help those of you who are learning how to optimize your own website.  These recommendations come from Meteorsite's 16 years experience in SEO and we offer them to you free of charge!

Let's start by summing SEO up in one word:  "Relevance"

Is your site content relevant to your site's primary subject matter?  If you dilute your message with content that does not speak to your core purpose, you are reducing your chances to rank well in the search engines.

This not only applies to your site's content, but also to other sites which link to you.  For example, if your website is about selling clothing and a 3rd party site that deals in mufflers links to you, it will not help your rankings in the slightest, and may even hurt them.

Links

Getting good quality back links is the only option worth pursuing.  As mentioned above, a low-quality link can hurt your rankings on Google and other search engines.

How do you go about getting high-quality links?  This is an art in itself and takes a lot of careful thought and dedicated effort.  Link-building is not as easy as it used to be!  The main thing to keep in mind is that your links must come from relevant websites.  How relevant?  As much as possible.

Here are some examples:

A) You sell shoes and get a link from a blog that talks about fashion.

B) You write a blog about music and have links coming to you from musician's websites.

C) Your site talks about rare Corvette's and you get a link from an automotive forum.

These are relevant, in-bound links that can help your rankings.

The more prominent the 3rd party site, the more benefit you will see.

Not all 'types' of in-bound links are the same.  For example, a "blogger authority" on a certain subject writing about you carries much more weight than a simple post on a forum.

Getting a link from such a high-value source is not always easy to do.  You have to provide that authority with a GREAT reason to link to you (such as great content, an incredible offer, something newsworthy that their readers will find of interest).  And creating such content and incentives for people to link to you should be a constant goal when optimizing your own website.  This is often referred to as 'link bait' and when done right, can work wonders for you.

Content

"Content is King" - this is still true.  But, not all content is king!  If you simply copy and paste text you find elsewhere on the internet you are wasting your time.  Read up on the given subject, let it swirl around in your brain a bit, and then write it in your own words, in your own way.  And do what you can to 'add' to that content but imparting your own experience and knowledge.  Your content MUST be unique and must contribute (and not mimic) other content on the web.  We can't stress this enough!
